Martes americana is widely distributed in North America, where it ranges from the treeline in Alaska and arctic Canada south to northern California, New Mexico, the Great Lakes, and the island of Newfoundland. American Marten inhabits mature coniferous or mixed forests with closed canopies, large trees, and abundant woody debris. The diet consists mostly of rodents, but also birds, insects, fruit and carrion.
